So we made it to Byron, finally. If you're ever in the area of Marengo, Illinois and you are looking for a campground, please do NOT stay at Lehman's Lakeside Camping Resort! We were so glad to finally make it back to civilization in Byron where the water runs fresh and clear--no rust here! The campsites are very nice, shady--and the lake is a pretty good size compared to our last stop. They all remind me of Camp Crystal Lake, there's no getting around that one.
This weekend the Master was off with pay so we indulged ourselves in sightseeing and having some fun before the real work started this week. We discovered downtown Rockford--pretty decent as far as the pub scene goes, offered a lot more than Byron's surrounding areas. Saturday we opted for the community campfire and socialized with some brew down by the lake...the neighbors, being from Georgia, shared their music willingly (Hank and a little David Allen Coe--what else did you expect?) from the front seat of their pick up truck and as the night sky grew with stars, so did the length of the tall tales--I learned of new bedroom games called "Turtle", one-eyed barrel horses, and how to smoke a broken cigarillo without catching your hair on fire while telling small children ghost stories...we did make it back to our camper with no mishaps.

Sunday we found ourselves in Oregon, Illinois--we found the Blackhawk statue along the Rock River and hopefully I'll get a better picture but for now, here he is from our view across the bank. Oregon was a great little town right on the river...a must see if you're in the area, classic Midwestern small town. We finally made it out of all that corn!
