New Stuff

I live behind. Way behind everyone else. Being behind means that you find out about really cool stuff long after it's been over being cool for everyone else. We only get two channels on our TV and one of those is University of Illinois PBS. Thank goodness for Austin City Limits, because I'm now the newest fan of Arcade Fire.

This group defines cool. And by the way, apparently "cool" isn't the coolest way to define cool. Sweet is the new cool. I stand by my old timer ways and refer to my favorite things as boss and bitchin'. Call me what you will. Arcade Fire is a bitchin' Canadian Indie rock group of multi-talented musicians led by the uber-brilliant husband / wife duo of Win Butler & Régine Chassagne. Real talent and real women...no bones here ladies.

PBS kept me company for New Year's as well. I spent the evening with the New York Philharmonic live at the Lincoln Center while my old man finished reading Lonely Pigeon or Dove or whatever.
So I guess it's official, I am no longer anywhere close to being "cool" myself. Bring me that rocking chair.

Special K,motor oil, toilet paper, and coffins?

So we've all seen this website. And that's cool. I guess everyone needs their fifteen minutes of fame. It's just that...well, that's not really what's bothering me. My beef with Wal-mart (and I say this objectively, kind of) is their newest sales venture. It hurts my heart a little, and that's mainly because this is the only line of work that I've ever been interested in besides communications.
The business of dying.

Looks like funeral homes everywhere will to have to cut corners and offer their own "rollbacks" because their newest competition is none other than supermarket mogul Wallyworld.
That's right, I'm not lying and neither is the BBC.
Check out the Wal-mart casket selection here. No, it's no joke. Even the infamous people of Wal-mart can afford a nice "Mom Remembered" steel coffin while the more savvy shoppers may choose the pricier bronze version. Maybe it's just me, I have this sleazy feeling I can't shake when I picture the grocery list below:

--paper towels
--AA batteries
--bananas
--fried chicken
--Tampax
--milk
--swiffer wet jet
--vacuum bags
--casket

Hey! Don't hate--they're made in the USA.

Stuff I Like

I'm sure most of my audience has seen the book Stuff White People Like. I decided to look through the entire list and test myself, just to see if I'm really as white as I think I am. After I racked up fifty, I had a pretty good idea that I was as cracker as they come.

I think some of my favorites are "listening to Black music that Black people don't listen to anymore"...my old man is guilty in the first degree (so are a lot of my friends). And my guilty white honky pleasure--#83 "bad memories of high school."
Check out the site here.

Boho Madness

It's here. It's everywhere. And I hate it. I hate Nascar with all of my Holy soul. The race is in, where else, Richmond. So, with all of the vacant lots and yards surrounding the track filled with campers and tents and cutoff shorts...the leftovers flock to the campground. Our campground. We're overflowing with life size Kasey Kahne cardboard cutouts, Mark Martin plastic blow up cars, Dick Trickle dolls, and twelve million checkered flag towels / outdoor rugs / cheesy camper patio lights / etc...etc...

I admit, I have been to a race in person--mind, this was many years ago and it was the night race in Charlotte. It rained. They dried the track with jet engines. I watched the mullets stand next to the fence, shirtless, drying themselves as the engines passed our section. I smelled the rubber. I felt the breeze as the cars whizzed by. I watched Jeff Gordon wreck. I watched Jeff Gordon win.
The race was about as exciting as writing this post. The only thing that's really stuck in my mind about Nascar...and that's saying a lot...is the fact that Kyle Petty doesn't wear underwear.

Mugshot of the Day

It's rare that I get the chance to blog about former rivals, enemies and schmucks. I can't describe the exhilaration I felt when I scrolled to find one of my biggest childhood enemies behind bars.
Once upon a time, in a land hot and humid filled with the scent of sulfur, there was a young mutant who we all knew as "Sloth". Now, if you're a Goonies fan, then you'll know who I'm referring to.
This guy looked just like the basement brother chained to the wall...and he chose me as his arch enemy. I'm assuming it's because I decided to date his best friend.
Sloth decided to take charge of the situation. He was determined to make me suffer, and so began the war. Walking to my car after school I noticed several large roofing nails under my tires--my boyfriend, being so kind and careful, told me he witnessed Sloth placing the nails under the tires. (Thanks Keith!)
Once I started my senior year, I drove a new car--big mistake. Sloth had his chance to make a statement, and he made it on the passenger side door of my 1998 Camaro.
Several police statements later, we found that there was no way to pin the crime on Sloth because our country high school chose NOT to place security cameras in our parking lot. Imagine that.
Did I mention that Sloth's driving record isn't exactly perfect? This isn't his first DUI--but money talks (obviously). I guess it's easy to compare to the long trips on the interstate where you're passed by some crazed drunk driver with Kentucky plates, wishing that the state troopers would do their job when five miles down the road you find them pulled over and handcuffed. It's a sweet feeling. That's how I feel seeing this face behind bars...sweet. Karma is almost always a bitch.

Parkin as the new Bates?

There's a new Norman Bates in town. Well, in Brooklyn actually. Thomas Parkin found a ghoulish, yet clever way of collecting extra money from the government--by dressing as his dead mother. Tom, like Norm, wore a wig and some of his mother's dresses to visit the bank and run daily errands. Adding to his monthly disability check, he also raked in his mother's social security checks. When questioned by police, "she" sat quietly and cooperated, while breathing through an oxygen tank. She was very polite and answered all of their questions, even covering for her son, saying he was not at home. Nobody would ever believe she could cook up such a situation, why she wouldn't even harm a fly!

Mugshot of the Day

This mugshot is no surprise. The local restaurant, well only restaurant in Enoree is run by a Greek-American man who enjoys stealing chainsaws, renting condemned houses and trailers to felons and convicts, reusing cooking oil and grease for at least two months, not bathing for weeks and maintaining a small yard full of ponies and goats while driving local neighbors crazy.
When he's not shooting dogs or buying abandoned buildings to watch them rot, he enjoys scaring local patrons with his black, furry teeth and long nasal hair.

I guess you're wondering why I know so much. Ages ago, I waited for the school bus to pick me up at the Clock restaurant in Enoree. I waited along with my cousins, Brandy, Sandy, Mandy, Chris, and sometimes Sherry. We lived across the county line, so in order to go to the place we now refer to as Hell, we cheated the system and waited for the bus at the Clock. Those mornings were fun, if Theodore was in a good mood he'd whip up a hamburger with shredded lettuce for Sandy. Chris was obsessed with the jukebox and Vanilla Ice. We knew we'd get milkshakes if we saw Stacy Price swing by for her fix in the morning, Theodore always loved it when she stopped by.
I got my first good whiff of Theodore's body odor that year.
Looks like Theodore's got more trouble on his hands than the usual swamp ass and sweater teeth...this time it's assault and battery. Maybe they'll find that chainsaw.

Gimme Some

Happy Cinco de Mayo neighbors! The island is cooking and we're almost well done. Donk has successfully picked up her first beach boyfriend this week. I wasn't surprised, she catches looks everywhere we go. Speaking of lookers--our favorite femme fatale is performing this weekend at Club One in Savannah. The Lady Chablis put Savannah on the map! She's most fondly remembered for her deliciously scandalous performance in the film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. We're hoping to score ringside seats to the late show for a taste of dark chocolate (with nuts)...

Dear Me

The mobile mansion (or trailer trash, whichever you prefer) homepage is catching a lot of hits. If there's any hope in selling the beast, it's with world wide coverage. Still, I hold my breath.

I guess that's the good news. The bad news, well funny news is the latest Google search phrase that's leading a fan to the backcountry. Check this out:

www.google.com/search?q=enoree bitches&rls=com.microsoft:*:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7TSHB_en

Wow! I never guessed this search term would lead them to the Labradoodle post! I hope it was worth the search effort. (Sorry for the disappointment)
Enoree bitches. I have to give that four stars--very clever. Personally I would've tried Enoree C**ts, but that's just me. At least the next time they need to find me, I'll finally have a post dedicated to the exact phrase.

Moose

I lost my favorite golden girl on Saturday. Bea fought cancer quietly for some time, and died peacefully at home. She was a beautiful, talented lady who taught us all how to laugh at ourselves.

P.S. I'm popular

I woke up early this morning, well I say morning...I guess it was the dead hour of three o'clock to be precise. Not only is this not the best hour to wake up alone, but it's not the best of times to hear a prowler outside your camper either. When is a good time to hear a prowler? Don't answer that.
For some reason I already knew who it was. The little bastard had been here before, so I jumped out of bed and stamped on the floor (thinking these loud thuds would scare him off). I flicked on the porch light and peered through the blinds. There he was. The masked bandit, back for more.
He was trying with all his might to open my plastic dog food tote, and eventually he'll figure it out--givse him a couple more nights to practice.
I opened the front door and watched him scatter (most likely to his friends hiding just beyond the geezer screen). Fifteen minutes later, he was back. Again, I opened the front door and he ran. Finally he gave up for the night / morning and I got a little sleep.
If he comes back tonight, I'm going to attempt the Donk approach--I don't care if she has to whip out some redneck dog chow, she'll show her little ass and keep these critters quarantined.

UPDATE: He came back again last night, this time a little early. It was only 11:00, and Dolly was still up. I opened the door to let her take a peek, and as soon as she spotted him she froze. Half in, half out of the doorway. I nudged her down the steps and that's all it took--she was off like a flash. I heard her make some sort of gargled bark noise as she made the chase. I think she was scared out of her wits but felt she needed to muster up some sort of scary dog noise to let that raccoon know who's boss. It must have worked, he didn't come back last night. After bounding up the steps, she collapsed on the floor and rolled to her "pet my tummy" position. She got a scratch or two for doing such a swell job.

Perfect timing for my current crisis.

There's a million things to be...

A lot of times when the old man is out of town, I find myself watching movies that I really don't need to watch. I think I already posted about Gary Oldman, and that's self explanatory, of course.
I start to think back on some of my very first old men...the ones I met through film and music.
Like most other teens, I did have realistic crushes (let's not forget the septic assistant); however, most of my infectious hormonal ravings belonged to boys of the big screen. I realize that I share this obsession with almost every other fourteen year old, but I would like to point out that I firmly believed that I would eventually meet and marry these men. Now there's your red flag for borderline personality disorder.

When I try to remember my first old man, the one and only Val Kilmer comes to mind. I was absolutely convinced that I could telepathically create a divorce between he and Joann. Eventually they did split up, but by then I had moved on to my next old man. If you ask Rachel, she'll be quick to tell about the many times I raped posters of Val as Batman and sniffed the underarms of Jim Morrison on my Doors t-shirt. We found the corner the most accessible point for placing posters in order to get the highest effect of make-out sessions. After we slobbered and drooled over most any and all paper products with Val's likeness (and Brad Pitt's in Rachel's case) we would talk into the night, comparing our fantasies with each other's idol. If we could rewrite the Top Gun script today, I can only hope that we (as Americans) would choose Goose over Maverick to survive the ejector seat accident.

I think after most of my Kilmer chemistry fizzled out, my attention turned to the pale faced introvert in Edward Scissorhands and my life long love affair began with Johnny Depp. It was easier with Johnny...no wife. Plus his hip girlfriend was my first and foremost favorite actress (of my short little life) so I had no problems with his love interest, hell I love her too!
Then my attention turned toward the head banger's ball, and an adolescent infatuation with Sebastian Bach began. And on my fifteenth birthday, my heart fell and broke into a million tiny pieces for my one and only old man...Mr. James Hetfield. My heart still belongs to this man and I do realize that I must share the wealth with Francesca. She seems a nice girl, there's no room for hate--she and I have a lot in common. We both love James.
So until I found the prince of darkness I now know as my current old man, I rambled through many a men. Most had the chiseled jaw lines...save James and his severe acne scars which helped him score even higher on my internal hotness report. Most had dark eyes, most were aggressive...save Johnny, the sensitive, artistic type--but could quite possibly hold his own if need be. Most were masculine, manly men--is this a word?
Who cares. I love all of my old mans!

time cast its spell on you but you won't forget me...
